Flu Vaccine Supplies Adequate Amid Rising Cases, Says Health Secretary
Scotland's Health Secretary, Neil Gray, has confirmed that there are sufficient supplies of the flu vaccine despite an unusually aggressive flu strain this season. Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast, Gray emphasized the importance of vaccination for those eligible, noting that the current strain is causing a significant number of illnesses.
Between September and November, over one million adults and 400,000 children received the flu shot. Official statistics reveal that flu cases in Scotland surged by 45% in a single week, climbing from 555 to 805 laboratory-confirmed infections.
Gray assured the public: "There is no concern regarding vaccination availability across Scotland; we have more than adequate stocks." He acknowledged the main challenge this year is the early and rapid rise in cases. "The vaccine helps prevent hospitalizations and reduces both the severity and spread of the illness. We strongly encourage eligible individuals to get vaccinated."
According to Public Health Scotland (PHS), for the week ending 23 November, the infection rate reached 14.5 per 100,000 people, up from 10 per 100,000 the previous week. Hospital admissions also increased from 279 to 391, while test positivity rates rose from 11.0% to 15.8%.
Dr. Claire Cameron, a consultant at Public Health Scotland, confirmed that the NHS vaccination programme is well-stocked and ongoing. "The national programme has sufficient vaccine supply. For those invited, the vaccine is available, and we encourage you to book your appointment if you havent done so." She also highlighted that the vaccine is effective in reducing severe illness, despite reports suggesting lower efficacy against the current strain.
Scottish Labour deputy leader Jackie Baillie criticized the NHS's preparedness, claiming that vaccine uptake is lower than last winter and warning of a potential crisis. "With the situation already critical in October, we risk a disastrous winter unless measures are taken. We need a comprehensive plan to protect Scots and reduce pressure on A&E, including increasing flu vaccination rates."
The early surge in flu cases has already impacted hospitals and schools across Scotland, prompting concerns about the severity of the season.
