Dec. 3 Billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman appeared before the Senate for a rare second confirmation hearing to evaluate his suitability as NASA's next administrator and to discuss the U.S. goal of outpacing China in lunar exploration. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee Chairman Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) expressed hope that Isaacman would be confirmed by the end of the month.
"Mr. Isaacman is expected to emphasize stability, accountability, and respect for the personnel driving NASA's missions," Cruz said, highlighting Isaacman's experience as commander of Inspiration4, the first all-civilian spaceflight, and the first private citizen to conduct a spacewalk. "He understands that mission success relies on both the crew and the dedicated professionals supporting them from the ground."
Cruz underlined that Isaacman shares the Senate's commitment to maintaining U.S. leadership in space. "America must remain the unrivaled leader in space exploration. That is why your confirmation must proceed quickly," he said.
Ranking Member Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) reaffirmed her support for Isaacman, emphasizing the strategic importance of a crewed lunar mission to ensure the U.S. leads China on the Moon. "Securing the first permanent human presence on the Moon is not a short-term objective but a foundation for long-term strategic, economic, and national security advantages," Cantwell explained.
Isaacman proposed that a lunar-based economy could sustain future space exploration without relying solely on taxpayer funding. Cantwell also suggested having a lunar lander ready by 2028 to support crewed missions and highlighted NASA's role in advancing science and technology, including artificial intelligence and advanced materials.
If confirmed, Isaacman would succeed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who has been serving as acting NASA administrator since July. Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) presented 40 letters backing Isaacman, stressing the urgency of staying ahead of China in the race to the Moon.
Isaacman described his confirmation hearing as an honor and reaffirmed the necessity of returning to the Moon promptly. "Falling behind could permanently shift the balance of power on Earth," he warned. He pledged to focus NASAs efforts on mission success rather than personal gain or contractor profit.
He outlined key priorities: advancing the Artemis program, establishing a sustainable lunar presence, and leveraging scientific, economic, and national security benefits. Isaacman also emphasized NASA's role in pioneering nuclear propulsion, nuclear electric and thermal power, and next-generation launch systems to enable missions to Mars and beyond.
"We will no longer tolerate gaps in capabilities, whether in low Earth orbit operations or lunar missions," Isaacman said. He maintained that a lunar economy could fund future exploration and initiate a new era of scientific discovery worldwide.
During the hearing, Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) secured a commitment from Isaacman that NASAs funding and workforce would remain intact. Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) confirmed that lunar missions remain Isaacman's priority over Mars. NASA plans the Artemis II crewed lunar flyby in February, with a lunar lander scheduled for completion in 2027 to enable crewed landings.
Isaacman, an associate of SpaceX founder Elon Musk, previously underwent a confirmation hearing in April after his initial January nomination. His nomination had been withdrawn in June but was later resubmitted by the President. During Wednesdays hearing, committee members generally expressed positive impressions of his candidacy.
