No legal action taken after two men die in scaffolding accident

BBC Scotland has confirmed that no legal proceedings will follow the deaths of two elderly men involved in a scaffolding accident in Peterhead.

The victims, George Forbes and Alistair Buchan, both aged 77, lost their lives during the 2021 incident on Merchant Street, close to St Peter's Church in Aberdeenshire.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) stated that after reviewing the circumstances, it has been determined that there will be no charges at this stage.

The accident occurred on the afternoon of 18 August 2021, prompting an emergency response. Mr Forbes was pronounced dead on the spot, while Mr Buchan was transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he later passed away.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conducted an investigation and submitted their findings to the procurator fiscal. COPFS commented: "Following thorough consideration of the facts and available admissible evidence, Crown counsel advised that no proceedings should be initiated at this time."

The statement also noted: "The Crown retains the option to pursue action in the future should new evidence emerge."

Local residents and those following North East Scotland news, including Orkney and Shetland updates, have been informed through BBC reporting channels.
