Pope Leo XIV advises U.S. against invading Venezuela, encourages acceptance of immigrants

Dec. 2 Pope Leo XIV addressed the ongoing migrant crisis and escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela on Tuesday. Speaking during his return flight to Rome from Lebanon, the pontiff cautioned about potential threats, including possible U.S. military involvement or an invasion of Venezuela, noting the importance of careful observation.

There appears to have been a phone call between the two leaders, he told journalists on board. Yet, there remains a real risk that some form of operation could take place.

Leo concluded his nearly week-long visit to Beirut with a large waterfront Mass attended by an estimated 150,000 people. During the flight, he discussed a variety of international concerns.

The U.S.-born pontiff emphasized the importance of pursuing dialogue with Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro. In Europe, fears are often stirred by those opposed to immigration, concerned about people from different countries, religions, or ethnic backgrounds, he remarked.

Pope Leo noted that the Churchs Conference of Bishops is working to ease tensions in South America. He also suggested that both Europe and North America could benefit from reducing fear and fostering genuine dialogue and mutual respect.
