Prison guard sentenced for inappropriate relationship with inmate

A 26-year-old prison officer has been sentenced after engaging in an improper relationship with an inmate and participating in a scheme to smuggle cannabis vapes into the facility. Megann Gibson, stationed at HMP Wealstun near Wetherby in 2023, was the subject of 102 internal reports from colleagues over a five-month period, Leeds Crown Court heard.

During earlier proceedings, it was revealed that Gibson had exchanged intimate messages with a member of an organised crime group and had sent 900 WhatsApp messages to his mother. Gibson, of Stornaway Square, Hull, admitted to misconduct in public office and possession of cannabis. She received a 12-month prison sentence on Friday.

The court learned that many of the reports flagged Gibson spending excessive time with inmates, entering their cells, and being unaccounted for during her shifts. While Gibson denied providing anything to the prisoner, correspondence from him thanked her for the vapes and referenced "enjoyed kisses," despite her denial of any sexual contact.

Following her arrest, 1,000 was discovered at her home, raising suspicions of payment for her involvement. Gibson claimed the money was withdrawn for a tattoo, though no evidence supported this explanation. Investigators also uncovered messages between Gibson and other organised crime members, indicating meetings at a Leeds pub.

Evidence further showed Gibson traveled to Sheffield to meet the prisoners mother, who acted as an intermediary. The misconduct occurred between 24 April and 18 May 2023, and Gibson was also seen smoking cannabis in her uniform inside her car.
