Major advancements are underway in the regeneration of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, according to council officials. The initiatives are focused on rejuvenating key locations, promoting sustainable transport, and fostering vibrant communities.
Key projects include the redevelopment of York Place shopping centre, the transformation of Midway multi-storey car park, and the revitalisation of the former Zanzibar nightclub site.
Councillor Simon Tagg, leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, described the Town Deal-supported projects as pivotal in reshaping the borough. "We are witnessing remarkable progress," he said. "It's an inspiring period, with numerous major projects repurposing and renewing brownfield sites."
Tagg also noted that the ongoing developments are likely to draw future investors as confidence in the area strengthens.
Project Details
The Midway multi-storey car park is being converted into residential flats. The York Place redevelopment is expected to be finished by late 2026, featuring 42 apartments, 11,148 sq ft of commercial space, and a 3,046 sq ft music venue.
The Midway project will deliver 111 flats along with more than 4,500 sq ft of shared amenities, including a gym and a mini-cinema, with completion targeted for summer 2027. The Ryecroft site is also set to provide 171 new homes and a community park.
Planning approval was granted in October for 63 affordable homes and five office units on the former Zanzibar nightclub location at Marsh Parade.
Additionally, Town Deal funding will support improvements such as pedestrian and cycle crossings, passenger information displays, and a new bus route connecting Keele University with other parts of the borough.
