Approval given for village housing scheme regeneration

A 10.7 million initiative aimed at rejuvenating a former mining village has received planning approval, despite objections from local residents. The project targets properties along Third Street, Fifth Street, and the site of the former Fourth Street in Horden, County Durham, and involves the demolition of existing structures to make way for over 100 new homes.

The new development will include a mix of council and private housing. Durham County Council, led by the Reform party, stated that efforts are underway to assist current residents in securing alternative accommodation during the transition.

The demolition plans generated substantial public feedback, with many residents advocating for the renovation of existing homes rather than their removal. Objectors emphasized the value of the community, noting that the homes still have utility and are integral to the neighborhood.

Cabinet member for resources, investment, and assets, Joe Quinn, confirmed that residents of Third and Fifth Streets would receive priority access to the new properties through a dedicated local letting scheme. He added that the project aims to address the issue of long-term vacant homes and demonstrates the councils commitment to creating thriving, resilient communities across County Durham.

The planning committee officially approved the scheme on Wednesday. Quinn also highlighted that the redevelopment is expected to stimulate further investment in the area. Funding for the project includes 6.2 million from Durham County Council and an additional 4.5 million from the North East Combined Authority.
