Metal contamination prompts recall of shredded cheese at Walmart and other stores

Over one million packages of shredded cheese available at large retailers, including Walmart, Publix, and Aldi, have been recalled due to the potential presence of metal fragments, the Food and Drug Administration reported.

The FDA notice, issued on December 1, states that the cheese was produced by Ohio-based Great Lakes Cheese Co. and distributed across 31 states as well as Puerto Rico. The recall has been classified as "Class II," indicating that consumption could lead to temporary or medically reversible health issues, though serious injuries are unlikely.

The largest portion of the recall involves nearly 236,000 cases of low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheese, with each case containing between four to twelve bags. Other products included in the recall are:

  • 15,490 cases of Italian-style shredded cheese blend
  • 4,298 cases of pizza-style shredded cheese blend
  • 4,131 cases of mozzarella and provolone shredded cheese blend
  • 1,900 cases of Happy Farms by Aldi Italian-style shredded cheese blend
  • 1,850 cases of Targets Good & Gather mozzarella & parmesan shredded cheese blend
  • 117 cases of Food Club finely shredded pizza-style four-cheese blend

These products carry sell-by dates ranging from January to late March 2026.

Affected Mozzarella Brands

The recalled low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheeses include several store brands:

  • Good & Gather (Target)
  • Great Value (Walmart)
  • Food Club (Various retailers)
  • Happy Farms (Aldi)

Sizes range from 5 lbs to 8 oz, including finely shredded, thick cut, and family-size options, with multiple UPC codes corresponding to each product variant.

Affected Italian-Style Shredded Cheese

Several Italian-style shredded cheese products are also part of the recall, including six-cheese blends under brands like Cache Valley Creamery and Simply Go Italian Style. Packaging ranges from 8 oz to 16 oz, in finely shredded and fine-cut forms.

The FDA advises consumers who have purchased any of the affected products to stop using them immediately and return them to the store for a refund or disposal.
