More than 1.5 Million Bags of Shredded Cheese Recalled in 31 US States

If you currently have shredded cheese in your fridge, its crucial to check the package immediately. More than 1.5 million bags, sold under various brand names nationwide, are part of a large-scale recall.

The recall began voluntarily on October 3, but the FDA has since classified it as a Class I recall, signaling a serious risk of harm if the cheese is consumed. The recall spans major national retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Aldi, as well as regional grocery chains including Publix, Food Lion, and H-E-B. Both store brands and other popular brands, including Borden, are affected.

The products are distributed widely, from California to Puerto Rico and almost everywhere in between. States impacted include Florida, New York, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Texas, among others. A complete list of the affected products, along with UPC codes and expiration dates, is available on the FDA website.

Cheese has repeatedly been linked to food recalls. Earlier this year, Aldi recalled cheese in three states due to potential metal contamination. Although smaller in scale, it was a warning of ongoing safety concerns. Additionally, Kraft recalled its Kraft Singles in 2023 because defective packaging could create small plastic fragments, posing a choking hazard. That recall did not reach Class I status.

Given the number of states, retailers, and brands involved, this recall is unusually extensive. Historically, four of the twelve largest dairy recalls in the U.S. involved cheese, and this latest event could potentially join that list.
