More than 1.5 Million Bags of Cheese Recalled from Walmart, Aldi, and Other Retailers Due to Possible Metal Contamination

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for more than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc., an Ohio-based manufacturer. The recall is due to potential contamination with small metal fragments originating from the raw materials supplied to the company.

Initially reported in October, the FDA upgraded the situation to a Class II recall on December 1. This classification means that consuming the affected cheese could lead to temporary or reversible health issues.

Metal fragments in food can cause serious health problems, including choking, dental injuries, and harm to the digestive system. Young children, older adults, and individuals with certain medical conditions are at the highest risk.

The recalled cheese was sold under multiple store brands, including Aldi, Walmarts Great Value, and Targets Good & Gather, across 31 U.S. states. These states include Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico, among others.

Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and pantries carefully if they purchased shredded cheese recently. Detailed lists of affected brands, product types, UPC codes, and best-by dates are available on the FDAs website. Some of the recalled products include:

  • Borden Low-Moisture Part-Skim Mozzarella Cheese
  • Brookshire's Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Cache Valley Creamery Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Happy Farms by Aldi Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • H-E-B Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Good & Gather Mozzarella & Provolone Blends
  • Great Value Italian Style Cheese
  • Simply Go Pizza Cheese Blends
  • Publix Italian Six Cheese Blend

If you have purchased any of these products, do not consume them. Consumers should either dispose of the cheese or return it to the store for a refund. Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming the recalled cheese should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
