This week, frigid Arctic air is spreading through the north-central, northern, and eastern United States, bringing sharply colder temperatures. Experts warn that these conditions could linger through the first half of the month, extending a December already marked by severe winter weather and widespread snow coverage.

According to AccuWeathers Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok, "This weeks cold surge is expected to be the first of three similar events. Another wave of Arctic air is likely next week, followed by a third the week after."

These repeated surges of Arctic air are anticipated to cause significant increases in energy consumption as residents seek warmth.

The Midwest already experienced several inches of snow over Thanksgiving weekend, and the arrival of Arctic air has compounded the wintry conditions. With more freezing temperatures expected, many communities are bracing for additional cold spells.

Visual Impact of the Cold

Residents are coping with the harsh weather in various ways. In New Bedford, Massachusetts, a woman bundled up fully while walking along Purchase Street on December 3, 2025. In Worcester, Massachusetts, slushy snow that froze overnight forced bartender Bob Gerber to use his shovel more like a pickaxe than a scoop.

Understanding the Polar Vortex

The Arctics polar vortex, a massive circular upper-air system, usually contains the coldest air over the North Pole. In winter, the vortex can strengthen, and occasionally, a portion of it drifts southward, sending freezing temperatures into the continental United States. Typically, the jet stream holds the vortex in place, but shifts can bring icy conditions to regions far from the Arctic.

The first week of December 2025 is marked by the first of three anticipated polar vortex events, set to deliver another blast of frigid air to the Northeast.
