Designer Claims Jay-Z and Solange Knowles Started Infamous Elevator Fight Due to This Comment

Will the true cause of Jay-Z and Solange Knowles notorious 2014 elevator clash ever be revealed? Fashion designer Oscar G. Lopez believes he knows the spark that set off the incident. According to Lopez, the confrontation between Beyoncs husband and her sister was triggered by a comment Jay-Z made to designer Rachel Roy during the 2014 Met Gala.

In an interview with the Daily Mail on December 4, Lopez, 52, explained that he thinks Jay-Z praised Roy, who was wearing a gown designed by Lopez himself. Solange felt it was inappropriate, Lopez stated, which stirred some drama, and the dress ended up making headlines.

Footage from security cameras at The Standard High Line hotel in New York City showed Solange, 39, shouting at her brother-in-law before apparently striking and kicking him. Jay-Z, 44, appeared to intervene in an effort to de-escalate the situation. TMZ released the video on May 12, days after the May 5 altercation, and it quickly went viral.

Lopez called the reason behind the dispute trivial, noting that Roy had previously been married to Damon Dash, the co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records with Jay-Z. Regarding the publicity from the gown he designed, Lopez added, Sometimes a scandal benefits you, even indirectly. It was like collateral attention, intended or not.

On May 15, 2014, Beyonc, Jay-Z, and Solange issued a joint statement addressing the controversy. Following the release of the elevator footage from May 5, speculation about the cause of this incident has been rampant. The important thing is that our family has resolved it, they told the Associated Press. Jay and Solange each take responsibility for their actions. They have apologized to each other, and our family has moved forward together.

The statement continued, Claims that Solange was intoxicated or behaved erratically that night are false. Like any family, we have disagreements, but we love each other and have put this behind us.

The exact cause of the elevator confrontation has never been officially confirmed by those involved.
