During a speech at the New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday, Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry sharply criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for vetoing a bill aimed at expanding hormone therapy coverage. Berry, addressing her advocacy through the womens health and menopause organization Respin, argued that the governors actions suggest he probably should not be our next president.
Berry highlighted the progress made by certain states in increasing access to hormone replacement therapy, which she emphasized is beneficial for both transgender youth and women undergoing menopause. She contrasted these efforts with Newsoms repeated vetoes of legislation that would have guaranteed 12 months of hormone therapy coverage.
He wont remain governor forever, Berry stated. By disregarding the needs of women in midlife and undervaluing half the population, he probably should not be our next president either.
Requests for comment from Newsoms office were not immediately answered.
Analysis: Halle Berry Criticizes Gavin Newsom’s Veto on Hormone Therapy Coverage
In her speech at the New York Times' DealBook Summit, Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry expressed strong disapproval of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s veto of a bill aimed at expanding coverage for hormone therapy. Berry, who advocates for women’s health through her organization Respin, underscored the importance of accessible hormone replacement therapy for both transgender youth and women experiencing menopause.
Berry pointed out the inconsistency between states that have taken steps to increase access to hormone therapy and Newsom’s repeated vetoes of legislation that would have guaranteed a full year of coverage. She criticized his actions, suggesting that they reveal a lack of commitment to addressing the needs of women in midlife, which could undermine his political future.
By framing the issue within the broader context of gender equity, Berry raised significant concerns about how Newsom's stance could impact his viability as a presidential candidate. While Newsom's office did not respond to the request for comment, Berry’s remarks have ignited a broader conversation about the role of elected officials in supporting comprehensive healthcare for women.
