Meghan Markle contacts her estranged father following his emergency leg amputation

Meghan Markle has reached out to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, after reports emerged that he underwent an emergency leg amputation earlier this week. A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Meghan has contacted her father, though no further details were provided.

According to Thomas Markle Jr., Thomas underwent the procedure in the Philippines, where he relocated earlier this year. The amputation was necessary due to severe complications with his leg. "One of his doctors said the next two or three days are critical," Thomas Jr. stated, adding that his father's left leg had been amputated below the knee to prevent further health risks, including infection, sepsis, or gangrene. He explained that the leg was "black and dying," and surgery was the only option to save his life.

Currently in stable condition in the intensive care unit, Thomas is expected to undergo another procedure to address a blood clot in his left thigh. His son emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that his father has a long recovery ahead. "This was a major operation, but it was necessary to save his life. I ask everyone to keep him in their thoughts," Thomas Jr. said, describing his father as a "brave and tough man." He also urged Meghan to show compassion during this challenging time.

This emergency follows several other health struggles Thomas has faced, including a stroke in 2022. Meghan and her father have been publicly estranged for several years, with the rift beginning prior to her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018. The conflict arose after Thomas admitted to staging paparazzi photos and allegedly lying to Meghan about his dealings with the media, leading to his absence at the royal wedding.

In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan opened up about the emotional toll of the estrangement, expressing, "I grieve a lot. Ive lost my father. I lost a baby. I nearly lost my name. Theres the loss of identity, but Im still standing." She added that her hope was for others to know that there is always "another side."

During the couple's 2022 documentary series "Harry & Meghan," Prince Harry reflected on the situation, stating that he felt responsible for the estrangement. "It's incredibly sad what happened. She had a father before this, and now she doesnt," Harry said, adding, "I shouldered that because if Meg wasnt with me, her dad would still be her dad."
