Thomas Markle is currently in critical condition following an emergency surgery to remove his left leg. The 81-year-old, who has not been in contact with Meghan Markle since her 2018 wedding, underwent a three-hour operation after a blood clot blocked circulation, causing his foot to darken rapidly.
Thomas Jr., his son, immediately took him to the hospital and has stayed by his side as doctors warn the upcoming days are crucial. Meghan Markle has not made any public statements regarding her fathers condition.
Sudden Health Crisis Leads to Leg Amputation
The emergency arose when a blood clot in Thomas Markles left foot stopped circulation, turning the limb blue and then black. According to Thomas Jr., medical tests revealed that immediate amputation was necessary to save his fathers life.
He was first taken to a local hospital before being transferred by ambulance to a larger facility in Cebu, Philippines, where he recently moved. Surgeons performed a three-hour procedure to remove the affected foot and lower leg.
"There was no alternative," said Thomas Jr. "The doctors told us it was a life-or-death situation."
Doctors Warn of Further Risks
Medical professionals indicated that another procedure may be required to address a blood clot in Thomass left thigh. They expressed deep concern about potential infection and stressed that the next 24 to 72 hours are critical for monitoring his recovery.
Thomas Jr. explained that doctors are closely watching for signs of sepsis or other complications, noting the heightened risk due to his age and existing health issues, including previous heart attacks, a major stroke in 2022, and mobility challenges.
Estranged Relationship With Meghan Markle
Thomas Markle raised Meghan from age 11 to 18 as a single parent. Their relationship deteriorated just before her 2018 royal wedding, when he chose not to attend following revelations of staged paparazzi photos. Meghan walked part of the aisle with King Charles instead, a gesture Thomas described as generous.
Since then, the estrangement has persisted. He has never met Prince Harry or his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet. Earlier this year, Thomas relocated to Cebu seeking a quieter life, although the emotional distance has not eased his longing to reconnect with Meghan.
Family Appeals for Support
As Thomas recovers, his son has expressed gratitude for international support and emphasized the long road ahead after the surgery and upcoming procedure. He also publicly appealed to Meghan to show compassion during this difficult time.
Meghan Markle continues her professional engagements, including the release of her Netflix holiday special, while Prince Harry recently appeared on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in a festive sketch, drawing both laughs and surprise from the audience.
