Prince Harry Mocks US Voters for Choosing a 'King' — Prompting Colbert to Quiet Angry Audience

During a scripted skit on The Late Show, Prince Harry provoked audible boos and jeers from the audience after making a playful remark about American voters supposedly choosing a king, referencing the historical irony given the U.S. break from British monarchy in 1776.

Harry joined the show mid-monologue at the Ed Sullivan Theater, shortly after host Stephen Colbert poked fun at Americans love for controversial holiday films featuring royalty. Colbert humorously suggested that Harry had gotten lost while seeking to audition for a fictional Hallmark movie, The Gingerbread Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska.

When Colbert asked why Harry would participate in such a movie, the prince responded, Well, you Americans are obsessed with Christmas movies and youre obsessed with royalty, so why not? Colbert lightly countered, saying, I wouldnt say were obsessed with royalty.

Seizing the moment, Harry added, Really? I heard you elected a king! The audience reacted with immediate groans, interpreting the remark as a jab at the U.S. president without naming him. Colbert attempted to smooth things over, acknowledging, Thats a fair point. No, hes got a point.

Harry then made a historical quip, referencing the Revolutionary War: And after making such a big deal about my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather, George III! Colbert responded with humor, Well, he was kind of a jerk. Harry mockingly replied, OK, let it go.
