"The View" co-host Sunny Hostin criticizes Halle Berry for criticizing Gavin Newsom at live event: 'He's made significant contributions for women'

During a recent live event, Sunny Hostin, cohost of The View, publicly disagreed with Halle Berry for her criticism of California Governor Gavin Newsom. Berry voiced her disapproval moments before Newsom took the stage, targeting his veto of the Menopause Care Equity Act (AB 432) for two consecutive years.

Hostin, a legal analyst and former federal prosecutor, expressed her disagreement on The View, stating, "I adore Halle Berry, I know Halle Berry. I disagree with her 100 percent on this." She explained that Newsom vetoed the bill to address concerns about healthcare costs, noting that premiums are expected to rise significantly in 2026.

She added that Newsom has implemented several initiatives benefiting women, including:

  • Allowing healthcare providers to prescribe abortion medication anonymously
  • Requiring state-regulated health plans to cover abortion pills regardless of federal approval status
  • Enhancing legal protections for healthcare providers against criminal prosecution
  • Signing legislation that ensures safety standards for products used by women, such as hair care, menstrual products, and prenatal vitamins

Hostin emphasized that Newsoms decisions are driven by a concern for public health and controlling rising healthcare costs, while still supporting womens rights.

Berry, founder of the menopausal care company Respin, had criticized Newsom for repeatedly vetoing the menopause bill, stating that he has overlooked womens needs and suggesting he may not be fit for higher office. Her remarks drew a strong reaction from the audience at The New York Times' DealBook Summit.

Newsoms team responded, highlighting that the vetoes were intended to prevent unintended increases in healthcare costs for millions of women. They expressed admiration for Berrys advocacy and emphasized their shared goal of expanding access to menopause care.
