Donald Trump has put forward a suggestion to rename the Republican Party while hinting once more at the possibility of seeking a third presidential term, despite constitutional limits. The former president shared the proposed name along with an AI-generated image of himself in a post on Truth Social on November 29.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prevents anyone from serving more than two terms as president. Nevertheless, Trump, 79, displayed an AI-created image of himself holding a campaign sign that read TRUMP 2028, YES! accompanied by the caption TRUMPLICANS!
This follows an earlier Truth Social post from November 26, where Trump floated alternative names for his supporters. There is a new word for a TRUMP REPUBLICAN, which is almost everyone (GREAT POLICY IS THE KEY!), he wrote. It is, TEPUBLICAN??? Or, TPUBLICAN???
Trumps mention of a third term in 2028 is not the first time he has addressed the idea publicly. Although he is legally barred from a third term, he has previously hinted at potential methods and even marketed Trump 2028 merchandise.
In March, during a phone interview with NBC News, Trump acknowledged interest from supporters, saying, A lot of people want me to do it. But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, its very early in the administration Im not joking. But it is far too early to think about it.
More recently, Trump appeared to retract these hints, recognizing the constitutional limit. While speaking to reporters on Air Force One in South Korea on October 29, he stated, It's pretty clear he could not run again. He referenced the 22nd Amendment, noting, No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
He added, Based on what I read, I guess Im not allowed to run. So well see what happens.
