FIFA could potentially award Trump a peace prize, even though it's not the Nobel

President Donald Trump's pursuit of an international peace accolade may reach a conclusion this Friday. Rather than the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump is expected to be honored with FIFA's newly established Peace Prize, according to reports from The New York Times.

The award is planned to be presented in Washington, D.C., during the draw for matchups in the 2026 World Cup. Its introduction highlights the close connection between Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who have met multiple times at high-profile events outside the realm of sports.

Trump and Infantino's Connection

Trump and Infantino developed a strong rapport during Trump's first presidential term, following FIFAs selection of the United States as a co-host for the 2026 World Cup. Infantino has traveled extensively to attend events with Trump, including an occasion when he arrived hours late to a FIFA meeting in Paraguay after touring the Persian Gulf with the former president, causing European officials to leave in frustration.

Trump has publicly expressed familiarity with Infantino, even calling him "my boy" during a Miami business summit. Despite FIFA's requirement for political neutrality, Infantino has voiced support for Trumps initiatives, describing them as "looking pretty good" during a Miami event.

Former FIFA governance head Miguel Maduro criticized the close relationship, suggesting it breaches FIFA's code of ethics regarding political neutrality. Infantino, however, insists that close ties with the U.S. administration are essential to ensuring a smooth World Cup, given that the majority of matches will take place in the United States.

The FIFA Peace Prize

The FIFA Peace Prize, formally named Football Unites the World, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to peace and unity globally. Trump has previously received FIFA recognition, including a World Cup trophy replica displayed during a White House visit in August.

The award ceremony will take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington during the 2026 World Cup pairing draw. Earlier controversies emerged after Trump replaced the center's leadership with supporters, and Democrats alleged FIFA received preferential treatment in using the venue. The Kennedy Center confirmed FIFA would contribute $5 million in sponsorships and a $2.4 million donation.

2026 World Cup Preparations

The 2026 World Cup, spanning the U.S., Canada, and Mexico with a record 104 matches, requires extensive planning. The White House has established a World Cup task force under the Department of Homeland Security, coordinating with federal, state, and local authorities to ensure smooth operations.

FIFA officials maintain that the U.S. administration holds the final authority on match locations, a point underscored during a discussion between Trump and Infantino regarding safety concerns in Seattle. Infantino emphasized that security is the top priority and would be addressed in consultation with authorities.
