Indiana Republican Takes Stand on Redistricting After Trump’s Insult: ‘Words Matter’

Indiana State Senator Mike Bohacek, a Republican, announced he will oppose congressional redistricting plans supported by former President Donald Trump. His decision comes after Trump used an offensive slur against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

Bohacek, representing the Michiana area and father to a daughter with Down syndrome, stated that Trumps comment crossed a personal boundary. The president reportedly used the derogatory term during a late-night anti-immigration speech, calling Walz seriously retarded.

Taking to Facebook, Bohacek emphasized that words have consequences and confirmed he would vote no on redistricting measures until Trump demonstrates that his policies and conduct merit congressional support.

This stance emerges at a critical moment for Indiana Republicans, who are debating redrawing the states congressional districts only four years after the last redistricting cycle. Trump has been urging GOP-controlled states to adjust district boundaries ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to maintain a potential House majority.

The pressure has become increasingly direct. House Speaker Mike Johnson plans to conduct a conference call with Indiana House Republicans on Saturday, despite publicly stating he has no involvement in state-level redistricting efforts. Johnson has also contacted Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray, whose caucus remains split on whether to proceed.

Even with national figures attempting to influence the process, multiple Republicans familiar with the vote count told Politico that the Senate currently lacks the votes to advance the redistricting plan.
