Live coverage: House Democrats address controversy surrounding Hegseth boat strikes and ObamaCare

House Democratic leaders are set to deliver statements Tuesday morning as the Trump administration faces criticism over recent Defense Department-ordered strikes on ships in the Caribbean reportedly carrying illegal drugs. Following reports concerning Defense Secretary Pete Hegseths involvement in the operations, Democrats have raised concerns about potential war crimes.

According to a report by The Washington Post last week, Hegseth instructed military officials to kill everybody during a September mission targeting a vessel. A second strike was authorized by an admiral after the initial attack left survivors. The White House has acknowledged the Defense Secretarys order, and Hegseth has defended the actions amid escalating tensions with Venezuela. Congressional leaders from both chambers have pledged to investigate the military operations.

Meanwhile, subsidies under the Affordable Care Act a critical issue during the prolonged government shutdown are expected to end at the years close. Democrats aim to push for a vote to extend these tax credits despite opposition from President Trump and Republican leaders.

The press briefing is scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m. EST.
