Van Epps, supported by Trump, wins Tennessee House race with a narrowing margin

Republican candidate Matt Van Epps has claimed victory in the special election for Tennessee's 7th Congressional District, maintaining the GOP's hold on the historically conservative seat. Despite the win, Democrats note that the slimmer margin may indicate evolving voter sentiment both locally and nationally.

Van Epps, a military veteran and former state general services commissioner, defeated Democratic state Representative Aftyn Behn in the race for the vacant U.S. House seat. The position became open following Representative Mark Green's resignation in July, as he pursued a private-sector opportunity.

Former President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Van Epps and later congratulated him on social media, highlighting that the candidate succeeded despite opposition from what Trump called the "radical left."

While the Republicans retained control, the final results drew attention for showing Van Epps winning by roughly 9 percentage points, a significant reduction from the 21-point margin that Mark Green achieved in the district last year. Political analysts suggest that this performance aligns with a broader trend of Democrats gaining ground in traditionally safe Republican districts during off-year and special elections.

The 7th District of Tennessee has been under Republican control since 1983. This election received heightened scrutiny as an early measure of Trump's influence on voters and a potential preview of the 2026 midterm elections.

Behns campaign emphasized cost-of-living concerns and reproductive rights, while Van Epps focused on his military service and commitment to Trumps policy priorities.

Despite the GOPs continued dominance in the district, Democrats point to the tighter outcome as evidence that even strong Republican areas may be experiencing shifts in voter behavior.
