Which Law Permits No Survivors? Fox Reporter Questions White House on Legality of Second Boat Strike

During Mondays briefing, Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich questioned White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt regarding the Trump administrations claim that it legally targeted a suspected drug smuggling vessel twice. The scrutiny follows a Washington Post report revealing that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth allegedly ordered the elimination of all individuals aboard a boat suspected of drug trafficking from Venezuela.

The report indicated that a second bombing was carried out to ensure no survivors remained from the initial strike. Leavitt had earlier stated that the order originated from Adm. Frank M. Bradley, who acted under Hegseths authorization. The administration has reportedly conducted multiple strikes against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean, resulting in approximately 83 fatalities.

Heinrich asked Leavitt, You mentioned the follow-up strike was lawful. Under what legal authority does it permit no survivors?

Leavitt responded, The strike on September 2nd was executed in self-defense to protect American lives and critical U.S. interests. It took place in international waters and complied with the laws of armed conflict.

Heinrich also inquired about a recent pardon for the Honduran president, questioning whether it conflicted with the administrations messaging, particularly as congressional Republicans defend the strikes against alleged narco-terrorists while the pardon favors a convicted drug trafficker.

Leavitt answered, I do not believe it does, Jacqui. President Trump has consistently emphasized protecting the U.S. homeland from illegal narcotics, whether arriving by land or sea. He has also made it clear that he intends to rectify the injustices of the previous administrations weaponized justice department.

The discussion highlights ongoing legal and ethical debates surrounding the Trump administrations approach to combating drug trafficking at sea.
