Backup offensive linemen of Patriots shine in Monday night victory against Giants

FOXBOROUGH On paper, the matchup looked challenging for the Patriots. With starting left tackle Will Campbell sidelined due to a knee injury and left guard Jared Wilson out with an ankle issue, the team had to rely on backups against a formidable New York Giants defensive front.

The Giants brought a strong lineup, including Pro Bowlers Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence, along with the No. 3 overall draft pick, Abdul Carter, creating potential trouble for quarterback Drake Maye. Despite this, the Patriots line, featuring backup left tackle Vederian Lowe and left guard Ben Brown, performed admirably, contributing to the teams Monday night win.

As an offensive line, we always aim to be the strongest unit on the field, said right guard Michael Onwenu. A lot of plays go through the line. Ben and V-Lowe understand the responsibility and are always ready for the opportunity.

Prior to Monday, the Patriots had enjoyed consistency along their line, starting the same five players in 11 of the first 12 games. This matchup marked the first time the team deployed two backups on the offensive line this season, both on the left side.

During the game, Maye was sacked three times and pressured twice. Brown was penalized for holding, but no false starts were called. The Patriots rushing attack gained 119 yards, averaging 4.1 yards per carry, while Burns, who entered the game with 13 sacks, recorded just one quarterback hit.

The players credited the coaching staff, particularly offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and offensive line coach Doug Marrone, for preparing Lowe and Brown for the start. Josh had an excellent plan for us. Coach Marrone and the o-line staff ensured we were locked in, Brown explained. Vederian and I played together last year, so we had confidence in each other and the entire line. Communication was key.

Lowe added, Preparation and communication were everything. We made sure we understood the game plan completely. Staying on the same page was crucial, and it worked.

Experience played a significant role. Lowe had started 13 games at left tackle last season while playing through a torn labrum, requiring offseason surgery. Monday was his first start of the 2025 season. Brown had previously started 10 games at center and one game at left guard this year.

We have full confidence in Ben and Vederian, said center Garrett Bradbury. The coaches prepared them well. Theyve been mentally ready for this opportunity. Playing next to Ben and having Vederians starting experience made it less of an adjustment.
