Despite Pressure from Trump, Putin Finds Willing Trade Partner in India

New Delhi Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday during the 23rd annual Russia-India Summit, reaching agreements to broaden economic cooperation as the United States urges India to reconsider its long-standing partnership with Russia.

The summit takes place at a critical time, with the U.S. promoting a Ukraine peace initiative while seeking international collaboration. India faces the challenge of balancing relations with Moscow and Washington as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

Putin was welcomed by Modi at New Delhis airport on Thursday, where the two leaders exchanged a warm hug and firm handshake. Following their discussions, they announced a comprehensive economic cooperation plan through 2030, aiming to diversify trade and increase annual bilateral commerce to $100 billion by the end of the decade. Energy collaboration was also highlighted as a key pillar of the partnership.

Last fiscal year, bilateral trade totaled $68.7 billion, with India running a significant trade deficit. Both sides agreed that expanding exports and establishing new economic initiatives, including a potential free trade zone with the Eurasian Economic Union, could help balance trade and strengthen ties.

Russia remains a dependable supplier of energy and essential resources for Indias growing economy, Putin said. We will continue providing uninterrupted fuel supplies to support Indias development.

Military-technical cooperation also remains strong, with both nations planning to accelerate delivery of defense systems and enhance joint exercises, disaster relief, and logistics coordination. India is upgrading its Russian-made fighter jets and seeking long-term access to fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and other critical supplies from Moscow.

Modi announced that India will introduce free electronic visas for Russian visitors and continue joint projects in nuclear energy, clean energy, shipbuilding, and labor mobility. Energy security has long been a cornerstone of India-Russia relations, and both leaders emphasized ongoing collaboration in strategic sectors.

While India maintains historical ties with Russia, critics warn that closer engagement could strain relations with the EU and the U.S., potentially complicating major trade negotiations. Recent U.S. tariffs on Indian imports were linked to discounted Russian oil purchases, highlighting the delicate balance New Delhi must maintain between Eastern and Western partners.

Analysts note that Indias approach reflects a long-standing strategic relationship with Russia dating back to the Cold War, coupled with a desire to strengthen ties with the United States, creating a complex diplomatic balancing act.
