Adam Sandler's Movie on Netflix Could Earn Him an Oscar Nomination Soon

Adam Sandler, long celebrated for his comedic genius, has never received an Oscar nomination despite delivering some genuinely remarkable performances. However, his upcoming Netflix film, Jay Kelly, could change that, potentially putting him in the running for Best Supporting Actor next March.

The film, directed by Noah Baumbach, stars George Clooney as the titular movie icon whose career achievements have disrupted his personal life. Sandler takes on the crucial role of Ron Sukenick, Jays devoted longtime manager. Unlike Sandlers recent lighthearted projects such as Murder Mystery or Happy Gilmore 2, this role offers him a deeper dramatic challenge.

In an August 2025 Vanity Fair interview, Sandler explained what drew him to the project. Having previously collaborated with Baumbach on The Meyerowitz Stories, Sandler was approached directly by the filmmaker. He just kind of said, 'Yeah, he's writing our next thing,' Sandler recalled, noting that he agreed to join immediately after reading the script. My character loves George's character so much, and I thought that would be fun to do and easy to do with George. And as an actor living a life somewhat similar to Jay Kelly, its a wild depiction.

Baumbach confirmed in Deadline that the role of Ron Sukenick was crafted specifically for Sandler, inspired by the actors commitment to family and his tendency to involve loved ones in his work. Sandlers daughters, Sunny and Sadie, for instance, often appear in his recent films. Baumbach emphasized that while Ron reflects traits of Sandler himself, the character remains distinct from his real-life persona. Ron is like Jay's shadow, Baumbach said, highlighting the interplay between Jays public struggles and Rons personal responsibilities as a parent and professional.

Sandler has previously explored dramatic roles, including his work in Funny People, Punch-Drunk Love, and Netflixs Hustle. Yet his portrayal of Howard Ratner in the 2019 thriller Uncut Gems remains a standout, showcasing his ability to balance intense tension with his innate comedic timing. This mastery of both humor and drama makes him an ideal choice for the complex role of Ron.

Given Baumbachs reputation for intricate, character-driven scripts and Sandlers proven dramatic talent, it is unsurprising that Jay Kelly provides a perfect stage for the actors depth and timing. Many critics argue that Sandlers performance in Uncut Gems deserved an Oscar, and Jay Kelly may finally secure him the recognition he has long been due.

Release Date: Jay Kelly will premiere on Netflix on December 5, 2025.
