'Sinners' leads in Critics Choice nominations'

The film "Sinners" emerged as the frontrunner in the Critics Choice Awards nominations announced Friday in Los Angeles, signaling the beginning of the film awards season. The period horror drama, both written and directed by Ryan Coogler, secured an impressive 17 nominations, including Best Picture, positioning it as an early contender for the upcoming Oscars in March.

Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" also strengthened its awards-season standing, receiving 14 nods, including five acting nominations for performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn.

Both leading films were produced by Warner Bros., which was recently in the headlines as Netflix announced plans to acquire the studio for $83 billion in a major entertainment industry deal.

Following them, "Frankenstein" and "Hamnet" each earned 11 nominations, while the musical sensation "Wicked: For Good" received seven, including a nod for Ariana Grande as Best Supporting Actress. However, Cynthia Erivo did not make it to the Best Actress category, which featured Emma Stone for her role in "Bugonia", a quirky film by Yorgos Lanthimos.

Notably, Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who recently stated he would return to Iran despite a one-year jail sentence, is competing in the Best Foreign Language Film category with "It Was Just An Accident". However, his Cannes Palme d'Or-winning film was not nominated for Best Picture.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian dramedy "Sentimental Value" did make the Best Picture list. Last years Critics Choice Best Picture winner, "Anora", went on to claim the Oscar, despite missing nominations at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

The Critics Choice Awards, though determined by a relatively small voting group, offer a clear glimpse into industry trends. Winners will be revealed on January 4.
