Supreme Court to review Trump birthright citizenship case

The U.S. Supreme Court announced on Friday that it will consider an accelerated appeal of former President Donald Trump's effort to end birthright citizenship through an executive order. The Court did not provide an explanation for its decision.

The case is expected to be scheduled for oral arguments in the spring, with a ruling likely by the end of June. This marks the second occasion the Supreme Court will review Trump's order, but this time justices are anticipated to examine the case on its substantive legal merits.

For over a century, the Constitution has been interpreted to grant U.S. citizenship to anyone born within the country, regardless of their parents' legal status.

Trump's executive order, issued during his second term, aimed to restrict citizenship to children born only to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Federal appellate courts have previously blocked the order nationwide, deeming it likely unlawful at first assessment.
