About a month after the Democrats decisive victories in the 2025 elections, Donald Trump declared that worries over living expenses are essentially dead. The following day, he doubled down, stating, I dont want to hear about the affordability issue.

During a mid-November address, Trump inaccurately claimed, Prices are dropping, and all of that stuff, prompting The New York Times to note that the president is increasingly denying that affordability problems exist while trying to reshape his public message.

At a recent White House Cabinet meeting, Trump insisted that Americans should not trust their own observations regarding living costs. Theres this fake narrative that the Democrats push about affordability, he said. They throw the word around, but it doesnt mean anything; its just said for effect. He continued, The term affordability is a con job by the Democrats. Its a Democratic scam.

Despite advice from White House aides to emphasize the importance of affordability to the American people, Trump is reportedly using the topic primarily to downplay its existence. He claimed that he inherited the worst inflation in history and asserted that he had reduced prescription drug costs by 800%, an impossible figure. While the administration has announced lower prices for 15 widely used medications, these reductions were made possible by policies enacted under the Biden administration.

Trump also cited gas prices of $1.99 in some parts of the country, a claim that does not reflect reality. Overall, he appears to frame affordability concerns as a scam while supplementing the argument with misleading statements.

The New York Times observed that the comments represented a shift for Trump, who had recently referred to himself as the affordability president and promoted efforts to lower costs. Instead of presenting a plan or requesting public patience, Trump repeatedly urged Americans to trust his statements over their own experiences.

The repetition of these claims highlights a growing disconnect between the presidents narrative and everyday realities, leaving him increasingly out of touch with the challenges faced by ordinary Americans.
