A Leeds man has been sentenced to prison following chaotic events that included the torching of a double-decker bus and the overturning of a police vehicle. The disturbances occurred on the evening of 18 July in Harehills, after authorities assisted social workers in placing four children into emergency foster care. The children were eventually returned to relatives.
Catalin Tiuga, 42, from Seaforth Place, was captured on CCTV hurling bottles at officers and holding a lighter used to ignite cardboard boxes, according to court testimony. Tiuga later admitted to charges of violent disorder and arson and was handed a four-year prison sentence at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday.
West Yorkshire Police reported that 33 individuals have now been convicted in connection with the Harehills disturbances. A total of 86 people were arrested, with 43 formally charged, as investigations continue.
