CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss Plans Her First On-Air Appearance: A Town Hall With Erika Kirk

CBS News is preparing a special town hall featuring Erika Kirk, widow of the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk and current leader of Turning Point USA. While Kirk has recently appeared in several media interviews, including a key discussion at the New York Times Dealbook Summit, the noteworthy element is that CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss will moderate the session.

The town hall is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 13, and will now precede the 28th annual Family Film and TV Awards, which has been rescheduled to Dec. 20. Weiss expressed her anticipation for the event, stating, I am eager to speak to Erika Kirk and thrilled to do so before an audience of Americans who will elevate the conversation.

Erika Kirk assumed leadership of Turning Point USA after her husbands tragic assassination on a college campus in September. At his memorial, she publicly forgave the perpetrator, describing the act as spontaneous and heartfelt, rather than part of any prepared remarks. That was a moment-to-moment decision, because I cannot say something I do not truly feel, she told media outlets.

Charlie Kirk gained prominence by leveraging social media to reach younger audiences increasingly disengaged from traditional news sources. Erika Kirk highlighted that this approach is now essential, as many younger people rely on platforms like TikTok and Instagram for information rather than established journalism.

Bari Weiss, who shares a similar understanding of modern media dynamics, was recruited to CBS News following Paramount CEO David Ellisons acquisition of her publication, The Free Press. Ellison expressed confidence that Weiss and CBS News would spearhead significant innovations in news reporting and distribution, aiming to expand their influence while maintaining journalistic leadership.
