Biden Encourages Increased Resistance Against Trump in Washington D.C Speech

Former President Joe Biden, who was in Boston on October 26, 2025, for an event, returned to Washington, D.C. on December 5, 2025, where he accepted a lifetime achievement award from the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute. In his speech, he urged LGBTQ+ activists, donors, and candidates to intensify efforts against Donald Trumps attempts to undermine his legacy.

"Donald Trump and his Republican allies are attempting to derail our fight for equality. They want to distort it, make it something frightening, something harmful," Biden said during his acceptance speech. "Equality is the most American value there is. Nothing else compares." His remarks resonated strongly with the LGBTQ+ community, a group familiar with Biden's long-standing support for their rights.

As Vice President, Biden was ahead of President Barack Obama in publicly supporting same-sex marriage in 2012. He also signed the Respect for Marriage Act, which repealed the Defense of Marriage Act, three years ago. "After years of struggle, we finally won the battle for equality," Biden declared. "It was hard work, but we did it. Its a victory we earned, and its one that will last."

Despite this progress, Biden acknowledged the current political climate, which can often feel disheartening. Under the Trump administration, anti-transgender policies have been rapidly implemented, and funding for LGBTQ+ programs has been slashed. "The challenges ahead may seem overwhelming, especially with everything coming from this White House," Biden commented.

Bidens remarks signal his readiness to more forcefully defend his legacy. After stepping down from the presidency in January, he maintained a relatively low profile while the public discourse about his administrations achievements and shortcomings faded. However, as the political scene heats up again, Biden is preparing to reassert himself, knowing that many of his critics are now more open to hearing his perspective.

The former presidents relationship with major donors has been lukewarm in the past, but his address to the LGBTQ+ Victory Institutes supporters highlights his acknowledgment of the importance of this network. Bidens re-election bid also appears more likely now, as many Democratic voters who once criticized him seem to be reconsidering his leadership.

Despite the challenges, Biden remains optimistic, drawing on his experience with overcoming previous crises. "America has faced many tough moments, but we always emerge stronger," he said, reaffirming his belief that the country can overcome its current divisions.

While Bidens health has been a topic of concern following his prostate cancer diagnosis and other health issues, he appeared in good spirits during his speech, despite the physical toll of aging. At 83 years old, Bidens optimism and dedication to his causes were evident as he re-engaged with the political world once more.
