82-year-old Paedophile Likely to Spend Rest of Life in Prison

An elderly man from Woodhall Spa, aged 82, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against a child. Ronald Short was found guilty of eight charges at Lincoln Crown Court, which included two counts of attempted rape, four counts of assault by penetration, and two charges of sexual assault.

During sentencing, Judge Simon Hirst highlighted that Short, who committed the offences in his early 60s, is likely to remain in prison for the remainder of his life.

The victim provided a statement describing the enduring emotional and psychological impact of the abuse. She said that she continues to relive the trauma, experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, and flashbacks since reporting the crimes to authorities.

Judge Hirst acknowledged the profound effect on the victim, noting that the court proceedings forced her to confront the abuse in a public setting. Prosecutor David Eager emphasized that Short had the opportunity to admit his actions but chose to take the case to trial.

Detective Constable Kyle Barlow stated that while the sentence cannot undo the harm inflicted, it may offer some reassurance to the victim and support their recovery process.

Additionally, a restraining order has been imposed, prohibiting Short from any future contact with the victim. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.
